Individual variation (intra- and inter-) in their use of resources is not well known, although there is growing evidence that individuals in a population vary considerably in the way they use their habitats and resources. However, knowledge of their life history traits, including feeding strategies and diets is limited by biases resulting from net feeding and subsequent stomach content analyses. Pelagic squids play a major role in the trophic structure of marine ecosystems as they constitute large pelagic biomasses, and are voracious predators and important prey for other organisms.
